Job description

The Nuclear Associate (Conventional Health & Safety) role

Inspectors employed within the Office for Nuclear Regulation are required to undertake a range of activities including:

  • inspection of nuclear installations and transport activities;
  • permissioning of licensee's activities based on safety case assessment;
  • reacting to emergent work including investigating incidents and implementation of formal enforcement action;
  • securing improvements at site and strategic level when necessary; and
  • interacting with and providing advice to a wide range of stakeholders including government departments.
  • assessment and inspection of local authority emergency plans.

Much of this work requires a high level of expert judgment.

The role of the B4 nuclear associate (conventional health & safety) primarily is to provide technical support to ONR inspectors in managing, planning and carrying out their regulatory duties with day to day administrative support provided by the programmes' business support teams. Targeting support to inspection activities is intended to allow increased technical expertise to be directed to the core regulatory functions exercised by ONR inspectors whilst promoting the development of the B4 Nuclear Associate.

This role provides a potential development route to become a Band 3 Conventional Health & Safety (CHS) Inspector.
