Job description

Chief Nuclear Inspector – Bootle, Merseyside – Up to £140,000 pa

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has a world class reputation that has been gained in an ever changing economic and social landscape.  The ONR has a mission to “provide efficient and effective regulation on the nuclear industry, holding it to account on behalf of the public”.  To deliver this, we aim to be an exemplary regulator that inspires respect, trust and confidence, and the role of Chief Nuclear Inspector is key to this.

Our CNI is leaving us, and so an exciting, demanding and rewarding opportunity has arisen in our Executive Management team.  The CNI is an Executive board member, and as Regulatory Head, has sole delegated authority from the ONR Board to exercise regulatory powers and lead delivery of regulatory functions.

The role provides assurance on the effectiveness of the UK’s nuclear regulatory system to the ONR Board and Ministers, and a wider group of stakeholders from industry, government, media, and the public.

Together with the Chief Executive, the CNI leads the drive for improved regulatory efficiency, effectiveness and consistency, and communication of ONR’s regulatory strategy and judgements to domestic and international stakeholders.

Working collaboratively with the Chief Executive and Chair, our CNI also shapes ONR’s direction and development, and is accountable for developing the capability and sustainability of our regulatory  teams to provide ONR with regulatory leadership.

Excellent nuclear regulatory insight, stakeholder engagement and leadership are pre-requisites for the role, along with an ability and drive to influence ONR’s wider strategy, development and success.  A proven leader in their own right, the successful candidate will also be an exemplary corporate/team player and have a track record of leading change in a technical field, where behaviours are as important as professional skills.

If you think you have the right experience of the nuclear sector, regulatory environment and senior leadership, along with a can-do attitude and ability to work in the public eye and interest, please do  take a look at the further details set out in  our full application pack including information on how to apply.

ONR seeks and welcomes applications from people irrespective of age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief or sexual orientation.
